People learn to fly for a variety of reasons. Some people are looking for a career in aviation while others wish only to fly for recreation.

The South Canterbury Aero Club can cater for all your needs from new students right through to Commercial Pilot training and beyond.

Private Pilot

What is a PPL?
A Private Pilot Licence (PPL) allows you to fly an aeroplane solo with passengers on board, for recreational and peronal enjoyment.


Gaining a PPL is how all pilots either recreationally or commercially start out. 

A PPL allows you to take friends and family on scenic joy rides,
or away for the weekend or even just to share the experience with others.

 

Requirements:
- No age limit to start learning
- 16 years old to fly solo
- At least 17 years of age to sit the PPL Flight test

- Be able to read, speak, and understand the English

- Obtain at least a current class two medical certificate

- Receive a minimum of 50 hours of flight time including

  Dual training and solo flights

- Pass 6 theory tests as well as the practical test

A Commercial Pilots licence is the option you need to pick if you a going to pursue a career in the aviation industry. A CPL allows you to act as the Pilot in Command of an aircraft for hire or reward.

 

Requirements
 

- Be at least 18 years of age

- Be able to read, speak, and understand the English  

  language

- Obtain at least a current class one medical certificate

- Receive a minimum of 200 hours of flight time including

  training and solo flights

- Pass the PPL knowledge tests as well as the 6 CPL

  knowledge tests and the practical test.

Commercial Pilot

Type Ratings

South Canterbury Aero Club offer type ratings in all the aircraft we have available to us, PA38, PA28, PA18, C172-RG. We can do your initial tail wheel ratings in our PA18 Super Cub. 

Mountain Flying

Located at the Timaru Airport, the South Canterbury Aero Club is situated in close proximity to Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Mckenzie Basin where we have lots of mountain and valley systems to choose from with fantastic scenery.
